Dharma in many religions and languages can mean: •virtue, righteousness, and the goal to gain liberation and salvation. This little Georgia transplant has shown nothing but perseverance on her journey to liberation and salvation! This gal may have hard a start in life but she holds no grudges against humans, and she is sweet, happy and practically vibrates with joy at times! We are sure with some more training and patience our Dharma girl is sure to become a fantastic family dog! Keep an eye on this gal her Karma is being paid back 10 fold!
Dharma is a happy, sweet and an extremely loving dog! This little gal came to SEPR as breeding dog. It seems that this lovely lady never saw the inside of a family home before. Dharma has had a bit of a learning curve. Everything was new and scary and she knew zero commands and definitely had zero manners. Luckily Dharma is a smart cookie! It took her no time at all to learn the basics like kennel training and house breaking. Dharma has also learned sit, sit and wait for meals/treats and she's almost mastered the down command!
When this little gal isn’t learning to be a better house mate she loves to play and go on walks. Mind you this is all knew to her and her excitement is abounding. Her foster mom has figured out that draining off of some of her energy before the actual walk makes them much more enjoyable. Draining can be simply allowing her to run laps on the backyard for 10-15 minutes or some time on the treadmill. It took some practice and patience but Dharma has become great on a leash, especially when wearing her weighted backpack. She walks with pride and joy. While Dharma is on the strong side a knowledgeable handler should have no trouble walking her with ease. She's interested in other dogs along the way but is easily redirected to focus on the walk & doesn't fence fight when invited. She does have a high prey drive so it's important to keep her focus when those pesky squirrels bait her!
A couple of months into her life as a SEPR dog Dharma has encountered yet another time to show her perseverance! Dharma has developed a seizure disorder that requires her to be on anti-seizure meds. So far her seizures have lasted around a minute. Her seizure type is one of the less severe of the types of seizures to have. Dharma did not lose control of bodily functions and afterwards she came out of the seizure with no after effects. Dharma did spend an overnight at the vet for treatment and diagnosis. Currently Dharma is on a twice a day medication (at the cost of around $1 a day) that has controlled her seizures 100% however she could have breakthrough seizures at any time and can be treated safely at home without a trip to the vet all of the time. As time and life goes on her seizure type could change, we have no way of knowing so for the time being we will continue treat her with daily meds. Along with the cost of the meds Dharma will need more routine visits to the vet to ensure her meds are a safe level for her liver. Her medical condition in NO way has affected her personality or life, she's the same happy, buoyant, goofy sweet love bug she's always been.
Dharma is hoping to find a forever family or person to love and care for her quirks and all. Someone who can provide structure and exercise & who doesn't mind one bit that she's comes with a few extra special "handle with care" instructions!!
