Meet Harper, our handsome black and white boy! Harper is a lean and lanky adult who came to us from Iowa on a wing and a prayer. Our foster program was full when we came across Harper, but luckily we found a caring individual who thinks he’s as special as we do! Harper thinks sleeping in a warm bed in South Dakota is a vast improvement over shelter life in Iowa!
Harper was a little unsure about his new foster home at first, but with strong leadership and the recommended two week shutdown he has come out of his shell in no time! Despite his shyness, Harper is a quick learner and has already learned to sit and wait before going outside or eating his food. He also has learned sit, kennel, and lay down; stay and come are the commands he’s working on mastering next! Harper also walks nicely on his gentle leader - he can sometimes be slightly distracted if his foster brother is along on the walk, but the majority of the time he is a breeze to walk.
Harper had an serious ear infection when he first came into his foster home and after spending some time in his foster family SEPR understands that Harper does have a some chronic ear issue due to some allergies he has. However, his ear infections are very easily managed by being pro-active with wax removal/cleanings each week. Harper allows his foster mom to apply and clean in his ears with no fuss. He does enjoy hot dogs as a reward for being such a good boy, though. Additionally to help with Harpers allergies he is on a strict grain free diet and just started daily pill cyclosporine ($150 for 100 count/day). He has been doing so well now that we have everything under control!
Harper loves being where you are, whether it’s going for a walk or just chilling on the couch. He doesn’t bark or cause commotions; when he meets new people he is friendly but doesn’t jump up. Harper lives with a male pit/mix and female Chihuahua. He puts up with his foster pit bull brother who loves to lick him and play with him, and is good with the foster home’s resident Chihuahua as well. He has met people ranging in ages from 13-65 and is good with all.
Harper is perfectly house trained and crate trained. He seems to know now that he is in a safe place and someone will always come back for him to spend some time cuddling him or playing tug. This gentleman will stay off furniture unless you invite him up, but how could you say no to that face? Will you let Harper be your couch buddy today?

Harper has the world against him. He is a Pit Bull mix... Nothing is worse for a dog than being a Pit Bull mix. Nobody wants them.
People that are interested in adopting a Pit Bull are looking for a full blooded one, or a dog with the strong physical features of a Pit Bull; Big head, muscular body, a short muzzle, etc. Harper doesn't have those features due to being a mix (possibly with Great Dane or Lab). On the other hand, people that are open to adopting a mix breed, often want nothing to do with a dog that has the infamous word "Pit Bull" in the mix.
So dogs like Harper are not wanted by anyone...
Which is totally ironic because quite frankly, Harper is one of the best dog we have in the program. He is super laid back and is content just to occupy himself. Personality wise, he has it all! But physically, he has a real hard time competing with our other dogs. In fact, Harper is probably at the wrong place with SEPR (he should be with an all-breed rescue) but he had nowhere else to go. It was us or death..... We're going to do all we can to find him a home, but we know his case wont be easy... Just because he is a Pit Bull mix, nothing else... So sad...
