Maverick is absolutely remarkable!!! This handsome man was saved from a fighting yard in Tennessee along female pit bull Shay. Never knowing a kind hand/word you would never know anything horrible was ever endured by this “happy-go-lucky” – “let me lick you right up side your face” guy!! He has grown so much confidence since the first night of foster care. After a few weeks of adjustment with SEPR, he really started to come out of his shell!
Maverick now lives with two foster sisters and is happy to be a “follower” to them and learn from them. Thanks to training classes, work with foster mom, and observation of his sisters, Maverick now knows sit, stay, leave it, drop, wait, eat, look, and more! Like many dogs who were once starved, Maverick was at first unsure when he would get to eat again and so would gulp his food down as fast as he could. Now Maverick has learned to sit nicely and wait until he is told to eat!
One accomplishment Maverick is most proud of is learning how to go up and down the stairs. Since he spent his previous life on a chain in the middle of the woods, he had never encountered such tricky obstacles before. However, with practice and encouragement from his foster mom, he mastered those steps and now goes both up AND down them like a pro!
Maverick is catching onto normal daily dog routines like house and crate training. Maverick has been housetrained and when he is ready to go outside will get your attention. He is able to hold his bladder and wait 8-12 hours during the day while in his kennel and overnight. Maverick started out with a desire to “collect” all his precious items in his crate...toys, bones, blankets, an occasional book and vacuum cleaner (see picture below). However, Maverick has learned that these things are not going away and so has not felt the need to hoard things in his kennel as much lately. He enjoys his kennel as his “safe” place and if the door is left open will choose to go and just lay in it. A great development is that Maverick has recently chosen to sleep in the bedroom with his foster sisters instead of his kennel. He thinks this sleeping on a bed instead of on the ground at the end of a chain is great stuff!
Maverick’s favorite hobbies include sunbathing in the yard and playing with his foster sisters. He also adores car rides and happily follows his sisters into the car—although he still needs a little extra boost to get in and out of the SUV! Mav makes an awesome copilot as he loves to ride shotgun and make sure you are going the right way. He will also ride in back, too, if that’s more your style…as long as he’s going for a ride, he won’t be picky! Maverick’s most favorite extracurricular, however, has to be his “Train-a-Bull” classes. Maverick is driven to please his handler and so is a quick learner!
There isn’t a heart this gentleman couldn’t melt. We are still trying to convince him that he doesn’t have to kiss everyone all the time. He loves attention and to give “kisses.” Life has come full circle for this dog and he couldn’t be more appreciative. Maverick is a clown, a lover, a puzzle solver, a social butterfly, athletic, and loyal – all in all he is a pit bull, perfect in his own way. SEPR cannot wait to see Maverick finally in his very own home!
