There is no better time than the holidays for enjoying scrumptious family favorites like turkey, stuffing, nut assortments, and pumpkin pie, and I’m sure your dogs are just excited to clean up any unattended plates or messes on the floor.

Thaxton (aka Thor) is making himself right at home here, he's always up for snuggling on the couch or our beds - often right on top of us if we allow it. He enjoys his nightly walks and goes crazy for toys that make any kind of noise, squeaks are his favorite but with they often don't last very long. One of his favorite things to do is to chase a flashlight beam around - he'd do it for hours until he fell over if we let him! Thaxton loves getting treats of people food but he's very polite while we're eating and doesn't go after our food. He's still being trained and there are a few things he's got to work on a lot more but he's always very well behaved - if he gets a little crazy running around with his toys he takes it down a notch when you tell him to calm down. If a squirrel starts teasing him and he decides he needs to try to run after it he'll tug at the leash a bit but stops when you tell him 'no.' Other dogs in the neighborhood don't bother him much - he rarely ever barks just gets very interested in them. Thaxton is a very funny quirky dog, if there's a strange noise on the tv he'll trot over with his head tilted and his nose right up near the tv to figure out what's going on. He's makes lots of goofy noises in his sleep, whenever he's given a rawhide bone he makes a huge deal out of trotting around the house with it proudly before 'burying' it in his blankets, digging it back up and burying it another dozen times and then finally chewing on it. He loves swinging on our front porch swing and pushing the swing with his nose when no one is sitting in it. Thaxton loves his kennel, he often goes inside after a walk or a treat to roll around snorting and growling and kicking happily. He's still pretty shy around new people sometimes but after a minute or so he's full of kisses and happy wiggles for his new friends. He loves to try to hop into the shower with us and he's been having a blast running laps around the backyard and playing fetch. -Mindy E. South Dakota, that howling you hear is the sound of independence July 01, 2014 - By Francis Battista - South Dakotans who visited their state capitol in Pierre July 1 may have wondered what all those pit bull terrier dogs, decked out in Fourth of July celebratory attire, were doing on the capitol steps. Well, it was South Dakota Pit Bull Independence Day – the day that SB 75 went into effect. Best Friends Animal Society spearheaded the effort to gain passage of the bill with the goals of protecting property rights and enhancing community safety in the most effective way possible. The March passage of SB 75 was a resounding victory for dogs and dog lovers not only in South Dakota but across the country, where momentum against breed-discriminatory legislation continues to build. We would like to thank the thousands of concerned citizens who called, wrote, emailed or testified in support of the bill. Prior to the signing of SB 75, it was legal for local governments in South Dakota to restrict people’s right to choose the dog breed or breed mix they felt was right for them. We believe that’s wrong, and it turns out a lot of Americans agree. A recent national survey commissioned by Best Friends Animal Society and conducted by Luntz Global found that 84 percent of those polled believe that local, state or federal governments should not infringe on a person’s right to have whatever breed of dog he or she chooses. Best Friends staff member Jacque Johnson and her husband, who have a pit bull terrier, are lifelong South Dakota residents. Currently living out of state, they eventually plan to return home to be near the rest of their family. Prior to the passage of SB 75, they feared that when they return, their local city council could pass a law banning their pet — even though their dog has passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen test. “My husband and I are both thrilled that the state of South Dakota has elected to ban breed discrimination,” Jacque says. “This law requires communities to put the responsibility where it belongs — squarely on the shoulders of irresponsible dog owners.” Best Friends works with state legislators around the country to prohibit breed-discriminatory laws and endorse the passage of new laws that focus on the behavior of individual dogs and their owners. Many cities are enacting reckless owner ordinances and 18 states currently prohibit some form of breed discrimination. Four other states are working on similar-themed bills. Hear that!? That's graduation music! Holly has now graduated from puppy kindergarten, and has also reached 45lbs. She is doing quite well at the basics (sit, stay, down, heel, look) and has also learned shake, dead (kinda), and to wait for just about anything. We can also make her sit and stay, show her a toy, the hide that toy in another room (along with others) and she will search for the one we showed her. Walks are getting pretty good and we try to take her twice a day, and she is always very willing to go. It usually works best for us to run a block or two to tire her out for the rest (but she's got way more energy than us). Rabbits are her biggest downfall, but we are working on that. She also loves to play fetch. Many times she will bring her ball over and "accidentally" get it stuck under the couch so I have to throw it for her. She also likes to chase the soccer ball around the yard as Jaimie and I try to keep it away from her. She now loves car rides, and has gotten a lot of attention at the drive throughs. She's got a boston terrier friend and they REALLY enjoy playing. They will chase each other round with a rope toy nonstop. Once they get too tired, they just lay there and lick each other's faces. We watch them really close, and I have seen zero aggression from her toward him, or any other dog or cat (or person). She just wants to play with everyone! Currently she is passed out on Jaimie's homework after a long day of chasing butterflies at the farm. I want to thank you again for such a wonderful dog! We couldn't imagine life without her. Please pass our thanks and well wishes along to everyone at SEPR, especially Tanyah. ~ Zach and Jaimi 'Heya, just wanted to check in. Saffir (formerly Sapphire) is doing well. Early mornings are my favorite; she just wants to cuddle while I drink coffee and read the news. Pulling has gotten progressively better and is almost non-existent without treats. It's been pretty trying, but I am a little vain about people seeing me loose-leash walk my beautiful dog. The only downside is... that she seems to always know the way home and has been getting a little stubborn about heading home. Well, that and rabbits are one distraction we'll probably never overcome. I'll change up the walk direction even more and hope that will work. We hiked around some bison a few weeks ago and aside from some initial nervousness/barking in the pickup she was great. Saffir and I headed to western Montana for some hiking and camping. It took a mountain, but this is the most happy/exhausted pics of Saffir (Sapphire) I've gotten. Thanks again to the SEPR for the match. ~Jon Miami is much happier now that the weather is warmer. I’ve been doing a lot of landscaping the last couple of weeks and she’s loving just laying out in the sun while I work. I’ve got a 50ft leash that I put her on and she’s constantly getting herself wrapped around the large rock in my front yard, or trees, or the shed, for some reason it seems like she only ever seems to go around things clockwise. If we’re inside and she doesn’t think I’m doing anything important she’ll whine at me to go outside. If she’s not outside sunbathing/playing with the neighbor dogs (especially Kirby who seems to appreciate having someone his own size to play with) she’s sleeping… preferably on top of me, or curled up in the papasan chair she’s claimed as her own. She’s continuing her love of peanut butter, I started enabling her by making frozen peanut butter balls to use as treats. When she’s excited, for example just being let out of her kennel, she runs into things in excitement and her tail could be classified as a weapon. It’s just the right height that she’s capable of completely clearing off my coffee tables, and it you don’t want to be in the line of fire. She’s definitely not a fan of bath time and we’re going to start working on some serious positive reinforcement there… The trees around my house drop sap which gets on everything so baths are becoming a much more common occurrence. ~Love Emily and Miami Ms. Holly (formerly known as Jingle) is the best decision we've ever made!! She's not just cute but also very smart! At almost 5 months old she knows the commands: sit, stay, leave it, and come. She also loves to cuddles with anyone and everyone and of course gives lots of kisses! She loves her brother and sister (Cats:Cali and Jack) and from time to time her and Jack are caught snuggling! ~ Breanna B Gosh!! What can we say about Mr. Parker. We have enjoyed him immensely for the last three months. We are definitely still in the "honeymoon" stage and still getting used to everything. The fact that Parker is so easy-going has made the transition pretty effortless. Not only does Parker fit right in with our monsters, but Gracey (our other dog) listens so much better and still goes with the flow. Both dogs get along really well and would not change it for anything. :) We cannot thank SEPR enough for doing what they do so that we can give Parker his forever home! We also want to thank Parker's foster mommy for taking such good care of Parker and being there every step of the way!!! ~Chrissie and Scott W. Thanks to a wonderful organization, we adopted Indie, formerly known as Melrose December 7th 2013. After watching the videos that the fosters had posted on the SEPR website, we were sold and I knew she was the one. I thought – “a dog that can play catch for hours” – Totally my kind of dog. When we first adopted Indie, she knew just basic commands such as sit, stay, shake, come, drop. I’ve taught her how to sit-pretty, high five, leave it, go to bed, go find it. She is such a smart dog and we are so thankful to have her in our lives. It’s been really life changing and coming home from work is a 200% more exciting than it used to be because we know that Indie will be there to greet us. ~ Lise L. |
